Anglers Use High-Value Tackle to Stretch Dollars
Brentwood, TN, September 15, 2008 High oil prices are driving outdoor enthusiasts to modify their buying habits. With fuel for boats and SUVs hovering around four dollars a gallon, hunters and anglers are turning to imaginative ways to enjoy field sports without breaking the family budget. Some opt for destinations closer to home. Others have switched from gas-guzzling outboards to muscle-powered canoes and kayaks. Fishing and hunting vacations are giving way to day trips.
But when it comes to equipment, outdoorsmen dont want to cut corners. They still insist on top-quality, high-performance gear. Skimping on meals and holding off trading in the pickup one more year before may be tolerable, but the rifle scope still has to provide a bright field of view on a cloudy morning; the fishing rod still need enough backbone to horse a 10-pound bass out from under a floating hydrilla mat; rain gear had better shed water and keep the wearer dry; a tow vehicle still needs the power and torque to power a bass boat up a slick ramp; and fishing lures have to impart the perfect sound and action that will entice big fish to strike.
Discerning sportsmen still open their wallets to pay a little more for equipment that deliver higher performance, more durability, and better results. But if buying top-notch gear also saves them a bundle, thats even better.
High-performance, high-value fishing tackle is the specialty of Brentwood, Tennessee-based Secret Weapon Lures. In 2001, this tackle company put a whole new spin on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Secret Weapon® builds fishing tackle that enables anglers to innovate, easily recombining components to produce lures perfectly adapted to changing conditions.
For six years, its Quickstrike spinnerbait has been turning heads both anglers as well as fish - from Okeechobee to Ontario. While at first glance this looks much like the safety pin spinnerbait design that has been a mainstay of anglers tackle boxes since 1951, it is radically different.
According to Secret Weapon president Joe Haubenreich, We were amazed that there have been virtually no changes in spinnerbaits in over fifty years. Our engineers took those lures all the way back to the drawing board. What emerged were unique designs that deliver better performance, better results… and better value, too.
Look closely, and the first thing youll notice is… no swivel and split rings. Instead, spinner blades are mounted on wire assemblies with a quick-clip on one end and a loop on the other. The clip allows a user to attach the blade to the spinnerbait frame in seconds and without tools. The loop at the other end permits the a second blade to be attached behind the first.
Once anglers discover the Secret Weapon difference, they buy additional lures and blade attachments, customizing an arsenal that equips them for a wide range of water and weather conditions. Some opt for a pre-packed kit. The Master Pack 500 ($49.99 in retail stores) includes enough components to produce over 500 one- and two-blade spinnerbait configurations.
A ProPack 2000 (retailing at $99.99) gives the angler access to over 2,000 combinations, and the Granddaddy of them all, the Expedition Pack (Retail $179.99), enables an angler to put up to 5,000 different looks in front of the fish. Thats more options than most tackle shops carry, and all in a small box that easily slips in a tackle locker or box. The effective cost of each unique configuration ranges from 10˘ (in a Master Pack) to under 4˘ with the Expedition Pack, making this by far the best spinnerbait value today.
Versatility and costs-savings are only two Secret Weapon advantages; even greater ones become evident once the lures are in the water.
Anglers who try these lures expand their arsenals because they quickly discover that spinnerbaits with free-floating, in-line spinner blades perform better than conventional swivel-mounted blade baits. They have less of a tendency to roll over due to blade torque when retrieved at high speeds, and the blades revolve freely when the bait is slow-rolled or as the blade flutters down on a slack line. Since the blades revolve in a wider arc, they produce more vibration with each turn, sending fish-attracting pulses farther through the water and allowing the angler to maintain a better feel for what the bait is doing at the other end of his line. And on the strike, the blade arms fold out of the way to allow better access to the hook point, which results in surer hook-ups.
In 2008, Secret Weapon introduced the Sidearm spinnerbait, an even more versatile version of its ground-breaking Quickstrike. This lure features a horizontal, detachable bar at the top of the wire fame that supports two side-by-side spinner blades. The compact, erratic flash produced by these twirling blades, which click and shudder when they occasionally strike one another, draws reaction strikes from fish that are feeding on shad, herring, and other small, schooling prey.
Secret Weapons top-water entry in top-water blade baits, the Buzzrbait, combines elements of buzzbaits and spinnerbaits into a single reconfigurable lure. Its horizontal head, which lifts the lure to allow slow retrieves, enables the lure to scoot across matted vegetation beneath which predators lurk. A flashing spinner blade mounted behind the big, triangular buzz blade, draws strikes toward the back of the lure where the Mustad® Ultrapoint hook is hidden beneath a silicone skirt.
