Capt. Mike Gerry shares a tip that makes his guided trips successful
Some days all we can catch are small fish on a top-water bite. Ive seen folks go to big Zara Spooks and increase the size of their Pop-Rs but the big bite still eludes them. We think that the big fish just arent biting. We start to lose interest and sometimes call it a day. Tournament fisherman pull up the trolling motor and go to different areas, thinking the big bass just arent here.
I believe there is a way to entice that big bite on top-water: buzz baits. Secret Weapon Buzzrbaits are just the ticket to get that big bite. The key is burning them over shallow grass. Most folks retrieve buzz baits just fast enough to keep them on top of the water. Many times I find that big bass will ignore baits that are barely staying on top or moving slowly across the water. Bass may roll at them or strike behind them and act as if they really dont want to feed. If top-water is the correct presentation for the day and the fish are not getting to the bait, burning a Buzzrbait could very well be the ticket to some trophy-size fish, especially early in the morning when you are trying to put those first five keepers in the livewell.
The tough thing about this retrieve is it will flat wear you down, because you are not just using a fast retrieve — you are burning that bait as fast as you can possible move it. The key is not to burn it so fast that it rolls or lies on its side. This is one reason I like the SWL Buzzrbaits. You can burn them and they will not roll over or lay to the side as many buzz baits do. You can reel them as fast as you want and they will stay true because of the way they are made with a trailing spinner blade behind the buzz prop.
Burning Buzz baits is the ticket to some big fish. Its the right time of year, so try it and get some great results.
