Tips:
Spinnerbaits: I like to let the spinnerbaits drag the mud and create a trail in early morning in the spring. I try to keep it at a steady pace but not a full all out ripping speed. Then if I miss a bite I have another rod & spinner on but the complete opposite color and do a follow through cast and most time I get the fish!
Crankbaits: I love to bounce the lip off everything on the bottom. I replace all my treble hooks with Mustad triple grip and I will mix red and nickel colors and on some I trim the single hook off that is pointed to the bottom. Helps with less snags! If I am 8 feet of water, I will use a 10 foot diving bait and if I am in 6 feet I use one that dives 8, and in that way I can always hit the bottom. It has been a deadly pattern for years now with me.
Gunners Story: I grew up in Shadyside Ohio, which is right on the banks of the Ohio River right down from Wheeling W.VA. Started fishing with my grandfather in 1975 when he retired and have been "hooked" ever since. Started fishing tourneys regularly in the mid-80s through the mid-90s (at one point I was fishing 250 days a year between bass and catfish) until I moved in 1994 to Springfield, Ohio. Now I hit as many as I can with the number increasing each year. In 2007 I got to move back to Shadyside Ohio where I will be more active in tourneys starting in '08.
I started Reel Fishing with Gunner in 2002 but it did not take off until 2003. The philosophy of the site is to bring together a knowledgeable group of people to get good reliable info and bring high quality products to the common person. We went into this because it seemed too at many sites, companies seem to direct their products to the people who could afford a $48,000 dollar bass boat and a $40,000 dollar truck to tow it with. To us it looked like the people that live paycheck to paycheck or have to work within a very tight budget were left out in the cold. We all have been there ourselves and looked for just such a place. So we wanted to give that group a place to call their own. We plan on doing Sponsor Spots on the site where you can click a link and watch a 3- to 5-minute video of what, why, and how we use or sponsors products!
Reel Fishing with Gunner now has a loyal readership of over 80,000 and I have become a writer for the Ohio sportsman paper, Country Anglin Outdoor Guide. That, along with giving seminars all over the USA and being a guest on different radio fishing shows throughout America has given me the chance to help others enjoy the sport of fishing and the enjoyment of the outdoors.
