Pro Pointers: My earliest memories of fishing come as a small kid fishing with my father and grandfather on Lake Bisteneau in Louisiana, catching grass shrimp and crawfish from ditches and canals along the way to the lake that we would use for bait. As I got older our family would frequently spend a whole week at fishing on Toledo Bend during our summer vacation from school. My great uncle was also a big influence in my life as he began taking me to Lake Guerrero, Mexico bass fishing when I was just 12 years old, back during a time when catching 125 to 150 fish a day was very common.
Over the years I was fortunate enough to have made several trips to various different lakes in Mexico. I was also very fortunate to have been exposed to so much about bass and bass fishing at such an early age. These lakes provided valuable experience that I would retain as an angler from just catching so many bass.
In the mid 70's we got our first bass boat and I entered my junior high school's buddy bass tournament. I remember that I "prefished" with the whole family in the boat. I fished the tournament with a friend of my Dad's and ended up winning the tournament located on D'Arbonne Lake. After fishing this tournament I joined a local Bass Club for the dawn of my competitive fishing was born.
During high school I continued to fish as I worked on Toledo Bend Reservoir with a friend of mine whose dad owned a resort on the lake. We would start going to the lake and working weekends in the early spring and would start full time spending the entire summer on the lake as soon as school was out.
We would get up and fish early before work, head out and stay till dark after work, and during the full moon we fished through the night. I can remember 4 of us in a boat drawing straws for who had to sit on the motor cover. We would spend hours and hours throwing the biggest Mann's Jelly Worm we owned catching huge bass for as long as the moon was up.
These are the times and events that shaped my passion to competitively fish.
Everyone loves to fish, from little kids on up for when that rods bends under the fight of a fish there is an adrenaline rush that hits like nothing else in the world and you are hooked. For some that rush becomes a passion that you spend the rest of your life in pursuit of, as a competitor, you understand that passion and live for the bite, the competition, the perfect cast, and ultimately, the catch and release of one of God's most elusive creatures.
Our sport of fishing is one of integrity, sportsmanship, and a dedication to not only protecting the fish we pursue but the conservation of our natural resources related to recreational angling and boating. These resources are important to us all as a society and are disappearing at an alarming rate. Without the dedication to conserving this habitat the future of recreational angling and boating along with a vital link to the aquatic food chain will be lost.
It is also a sport that transcends gender, age and race. A venue where a multitude of opportunities exist for people to participate in, from youth clubs, local bass clubs, buddy bass tournaments, and the Weekend Series offered by BASS. The more competitive individuals may choose to follow the Woman's Bassmaster Tour or the Bassmaster Opens and have the opportunity to fish against other professionals in the sport. Participation in the "Open" series of tournaments can lead to qualifying for the "Elite Series", bass fishing's most prestigious and competitive circuit. As a member of BASS and the Association of BASS Professionals I support these ideals and values and feel blessed to be a part of something so special.
